IFR Example

IFR Flight Example Transcript

  • In real life you should file a flight plan before starting an IFR flight
  • There is no altitude limit to fly IFR. However, you have to comply with the Flight Level Allocation Scheme of each airway. (FLAS)
  • IFR means that you fly and navigate to your destination by means of Navigational aids such as VOR beacons, NDB Beacons and Intersections. Usually they will fly on waypoints and Airways as published on different flight charts. For the routes connecting from the airport to the airways in the sky, please refer to the Standard Instrument Departure Routes (SIDs) and Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STARs) as you can find on the charts of different airports.
  • If your flight commences outside controlled airspace (see airway charts) you do not need clearance to operate, however you must turn to unicom channel 122.8  and make all the blind calls for every movement you have done. Remain outside controlled airspace until you are cleared to enter.

The following is a transcript of an IFR flight, CPA408, from Hong Kong International Airport (VHHH) to Taipei Taoyuan International Airport (RCTP), with full ATC along the way:

The time now is 2245. The departure time is well over the time for noise abatement procedures, hence CPA408 has to use RASSE3A instead of OCEAN2A to avoid overflying Victoria Harbour.

CPA408 is now fully prepared, with flight plan sent as follows:

Hong Kong Delivery, Cathay 408, Boeing 747-400, stand S33 with information GOLF 1017, request IFR Clearance to Taipei

CPA408 puts the squawk on standby, with the code set to 5323. Set the Altitude to 5000 feet, the initial altitude of RASSE3A.

VHHH_DEL:
CPA408, readback correct, contract Ground 122.55 when ready.

Now the very late wealthy unruly  passenger has got on board. No one can get on or out of the plane now. Change the COM1 to 122.55.

CPA408:
Hong Kong Ground, CPA408, stand S33, ready for start up and push back.

VHHH_GND:
CPA408, start up and push back approved, facing west if able. Report ready for taxi.

You can start your engines. Press Shift+P to push back with 1 and 2 for turning left or right. Remember not to crash on other planes nearby.

Take a piece of paper and write the route. Compare it with the ground chart. Sometimes the taxiways are not as striaght forward as in Hong Kong. Set the QNH to 1017.

Change the COM1 to 118.4.

Hold at the holding point. Do not enter the runway without permission of the ATC. You might crash on other landing traffic. Put the squawk to mode C both on the plane and on IVAP.

VHHH_TWR:

Check the Boeing 777. After it takes off, slowly taxy into the runway. Do not take off unless you have received ‘cleared for take off’.

After V1, put your hands off the throttle. At Rotate, slowly pull your yoke towards you to climb out. Retract your gear after you get airborne. Turn NAV and  AP on.

Change the COM1 to 123.8

Turn your Altitude knob to 25000 feet. After the transition altitude of 9000 feet, turn the QNH to Standard / 1013

Turn your Altitude knob to 4000 feet. After the transition level of 13000 feet in Taipei, turn the QNH to local QNH (1010 in this case).

Disengage the AP when you are comfortable to take control.
Slightly pull the yoke towards you to flare the plane so it touches the ground, not smashing into the ground.

Change the COM1 to 121.7. Put the squawk to standby both on the plane and on IVAP.
